Since the UNO is the most used and documented board of the whole Arduino family, there is an abundance of open source documentation and starter projects for you to learn with. This compatible UNO R3 is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P. It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM (Pulsed width modulation) outputs, 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz quartz crystal, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header and a reset button. It has everything you need to support the microcontroller. Connect it to your computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery (using either the included USB Cable or the Barrel to battery snap plug) to get started. The ATmega328 on this Uno comes preprogrammed with a bootloader that allows you to upload new code to it without the use of an external hardware programmer. It communicates using the original STK500 protocol. If you bypass the bootloader and program the microcontroller through the ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) header, you should use an Arduino ISP or similar.
